Security at Port of Portland
to get Lift Under New Law

by Associated Press
KXLY, October 14, 2006

PORTLAND, ORE. -- Security at the Port of Portland will be beefed up under a new law signed this week by President Bush. The new law requires the 22 largest US ports to install machines that can detect a dirty bomb or other nuclear device.

That's already underway at the ports of Seattle and Tacoma.

Mark Crosby, the Chief of Public Safety at the Port of Portland, says that under the new law, port workers will also get more emergency training.

The law is aimed at the possibility of a nuclear, biological or chemical attack on a seaport.

Now, the big question is whether Congress will fully fund the new law, at a cost of $400 million a year.
