Fish Abound through Bonneville Dam

by Associated Press

PORTLAND, Ore. -- More than 7,000 fish are moving through Bonneville Dam fishways each day -- giving visitors the thrill of seeing up close the regions iconic Chinook salmon, steelhead and coho.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers says though the fall runs historically peak in mid-September, this year's runs are peaking later.

And Corps biologist Dennis Schwartz says it is allowing fairly substantial numbers to remain for spectators.

Each day, about 4,000 fall Chinook salmon, 2,000 steelhead and 1,500 coho are passing through Bonneville Dams second powerhouse fish ladders on their way upriver.

Viewers can watch the fish through underwater viewing windows in the Washington Shore Fish Viewing Building from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily.

While the fish viewing windows at the Bradford Island Visitor Center on the Oregon side of the project also are open, most of the fish are traveling in the Washington side of the river.
