Cargo Ship runs aground near portland An investigation is underway after a large cargo ship ran aground outside the Port of Portland.

The 872-foot "Hanjin Beijing" was reportedly on its way from the Port of Portland to the Pacific Ocean, and ultimately Japan, when it hit sand a few miles downstream of Columbia City.

Authorities say a change in tides helped free the ship.

The U.S. Coast Guard used tug boats to escort it to Kalama, Washington so it could be checked out for damage before heading to Japan.
