Alcoa To Restart Intalco Line

by Staff
Washington CEO, November 30, 2006

FERNDALE - Alcoa is restarting its second potline at its Intalco Works aluminum smelter in Ferndale. The potline, a row of electrolytic cells used to produce aluminum, has not been operated since 2003.

The new line is likely to add 170 high-wage jobs to the plant's workforce of 450, bringing the total to 620. Production is likely to increase by 7,500 metric tons per month, or 180,000 metric tons per year, which is two-thirds of the plant's operating capacity. The company anticipates having the second line running by the first half of 2007.

Alcoa is able to restart the line because of favorable market conditions as well as economic support from the Bonneville Power Administration, the state of Washington and a new labor contract that will help the company offset the cost of buying power on the open market, which Alcoa has to do under its contract with the BPA for the next five years.
