Corps Awards Contract for Repairs
at 980-MW McNary Hydropower Project

by Richard Read
The Oregonian, August 14, 2012

McNary Dam on the Columbia River spills water over spillways. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a contract worth US$331,670 Gyllenberg Construction Inc. for emergency gate bulkhead work at the 980-MW McNary hydropower project.

The Corps' last solicited bids for the project in June, which calls for the fabrication and delivery of stainless steel roller chains, connecting links, drive chain sprockets, lower radius take-up track pieces, sweep tube brushes and guides, control arm pins, drive shaft coupling pieces, and an arbor press for the screens.

HydroWorld.com reported earlier that the Corps' Walla Walla District had McNary's emergency intake gate bulkheads 1 and 3 torch cut into four pieces, which were later re-welded. Though the bulkheads have been out of service since 2006, ultrasonic testing in 2007 revealed the welds to be unsatisfactory. McNary Dam is located on the Columbia River.
