Chinook Bag Limit Changes Announced

by Staff
Lewiston Tribune, June 2, 2009

Runts outrun big guys An adult chinook on the banks of the Columbia River beside a small jack chinook, which are showing up in record numbers.

The bag limit on adult chinook on the Clearwater River downstream of the Orofino Bridge will move to zero starting Monday morning.

Beginning Monday, anglers will be allowed to keep up to four hatchery jack salmon per day between the railroad bridge at Lewiston to the bridge at Orofino until further notice.

No other changes to chinook seasons or bag limits are being made at this time. But fisheries managers will review the harvest data again on Monday to determine if additional changes are required.

The bag limits below the Orofino Bridge are being reduced to ensure that anglers in places like Kooskia, Kamiah, Powell and the communities along the South Fork of the Clearwater River have an opportunity to fish for salmon before the state's share of the run is exhausted. Bag limits on adult salmon between Lewiston and Cherrylane were reduced to zero last month in an effort to ensure fishing opportunity for anglers in the Orofino area.

According to Idaho Fish and Game salmon managers, 42 percent of the state's share of the Clearwater River chinook run had been harvested by the end of May. Most of the harvest occurred downstream of the Orofino Bridge. By Sunday, Fish and Game official estimate that more than 65 percent of the state's harvest share will have been caught, with the majority of that harvest occurring downstream of the Orofino Bridge.

Until further notice, the daily bag limit in the North Fork Clearwater River below Dworshak Dam, the mainstem Clearwater River above the Orofino Bridge, and the South Fork Clearwater and the Lochsa rivers will continue to be four salmon but only one may be 24 inches or longer.
