Workers in white hardhats and orange vests check over a barge that ran aground on the Columbia River during the night. (Oregonian photo) One of four barges being transported by a tugboat through the Columbia River ran aground near the mouth of the Hood River in Oregon Thursday.

Coast Guard Sector Portland received a report of the grounding from the crew of the Tidewater tug Chief at 3:48 a.m. The crew of the tug was transporting four barges through the river when the barge ran aground. Of the four barges being transported, three are empty, while the fourth is laden with gasoline.

Sector Portland has dispatched an incident management team and an investigation and inspection team to check for possible pollution and to determine the cause of the grounding. The Tidewater tug Ruth is en-route to the area to assist with removing the barge.

There is no report of any sheening/pollution from the barge at this time.
