Spring Chinook Run Beats Last Year's

by Staff
BPA Journal, July 1, 2006

After one of the latest starts on record, almost 124,000 spring chinook salmon passed Bonneville Dam on their way up river by the official close of the season June 14. That beat last year's count of 95,000 and is higher than estimates made earlier in the season.

Spring chinook typically start returning to the Columbia River in late February or early March, but, for a second straight year, the fish didn't appear in substantial numbers until May. Experts are unsure why returns have been late for the past two years.
