Fish and Game plants hundreds of chinook for anglers to catch

Idaho Fish and Game's Gene McPherson prepares to hand off a couple of chinook salmon for release in the Boise River near Boise State University on Wednesday. About 200 hatchery chinook were planted in the river. The Idaho Fish and Game Commission on Wednesday approved opening salmon fishing today on the Boise and North Fork of the Payette rivers.

During the telephone conference meeting, commissioners also approved a salmon season for the South Fork of the Salmon River, which will open June 10, pending approval from the National Marine Fisheries Service.

About 200 hatchery chinook were planted in the Boise River on Wednesday afternoon, and another 200 are due to arrive Friday.

Fish are being planted between Glenwood Bridge and Barber Dam.

F&G personnel planted 130 salmon into the North Fork of the Payette River on Wednesday and will plant another 130 this week.

Salmon fishing on the North Fork is allowed between Carbarton Road Bridge and Cascade Dam.

The salmon are surplus fish from the Rapid River hatchery near Riggins, which is trapping a record return of chinook.

"This large run of hatchery fish allows us to offer the opportunity for anglers to catch salmon in streams where chinook salmon used to migrate naturally," Idaho Department of Fish and Game's Anadromous Fisheries Coordinator Bill Horton said.

F&G expects to plant a total of 2,000 salmon in the Boise and North Fork of the Payette rivers.
