Spring Chinook Fishing Closes Sunday Between Bonneville, McNary Dams by Bill Monroe The Oregonian, May 7, 2010

Spring chinook salmon fishing will close Sunday evening in the Columbia River between Bonneville and McNary dams.

Fishing remains open in the Snake River, where catches of hatchery fish are just beginning.

And sport seasons will reopen Saturday in lower Columbia River select area fisheries zones after gill-net results show most upriver Columbia fish have moved out.

Oregon and Washington fish managers met Friday by telephone and made the decisions, saying it's unlikely the spring chinook run will meet the prediction of a record 470,000 adults. Their new predicted range is between 310,000 and 370,000. The figure will be narrowed further Monday, after the weekend's fish counts are made at Bonneville Dam's counting windows.

Upriver anglers caught about 3,400 hatchery spring chinook, almost all between The Dalles and Umatilla and most of those downriver from the John Day and McNary dams.

The catch, twice that of previous high catches in that area, was evenly split between the areas below the dams.
