U.S. Seeks Trash Boom Repair at 810-MW Lower Granite by PennWell HydroWorld, December 2, 2011

WALLA WALLA, Wash. -- The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks bids to repair a trash shear boom at the 810-MW Lower Granite hydroelectric project in Washington. Bids are due Dec. 23.

The Corps' Walla Walla District awarded a contract in May to Hydro Consulting & Maintenance Services Inc. for cavitation repair at Lower Granite on the Snake River.

In a solicitation set aside for small businesses, the Corps seeks bids to repair the trash shear boom, a floating structure in the forebay that is designed to direct floating trash and debris away from the powerhouse turbine intakes. The boom consists of five spans held in position by four intermediate floats, which are held in place by two anchors, with a chain-wire rope hardware system linking the anchors to the intermediate floats.

The Corp said some wire ropes have broken and are replaced temporarily by poly ropes. One anchor was replaced permanently in the winter of 2006-2007. The agency now seeks replacement of the remaining seven anchor line systems. The work is valued at between $500,000 and $1 million.
