Bounty Fishing Yields Big Rewards
for Columbia and Snake Anglers

by Bill Monroe
The Oregonian, October 29, 2011

The value of these northern pikeminnows ranges from $32 to $64 for the lucky angler, depending upon how many he or she has already caught. It's cash in the creel.

The annual pikeminnow bounty removed more than 155,000 fish from the Columbia and lower Snake rivers this season, putting tens of thousands of dollars in the pockets of local anglers.

Russell Porter, senior program manager for the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, said in a news release the haul, by about 3,000 participating anglers, will have saved "an estimated 4 million young salmon and steelhead from getting eaten by the hungry predators." The commission administers the program with funds from the Bonneville Power Administration.

Porter said this year's top anglers were Nikolay Zaremskiy of Gresham, with $66,478 and David Vasilchuk of Vancouver, with $60,742.
