BPA Plays a Leading Role in Decline of Fish

by Michael Garrity

(Kirk Lyttle) Fishing in emptiness Your Thursday headline, "BPA's salmon runs decline again," is all too revealing of the way many in the Northwest political and business establishment view the Columbia and Snake rivers and their salmon -- not as shared resources vital to the Northwest's economy and culture, but as resources that are secondary to the whims of the Bonneville Power Administration, which has played a leading role in their decline.

These are the salmon runs of the Columbia, Snake and the people of the Northwest, not BPA. Our great rivers and their salmon belong to all of us, as does the responsibility to ensure that we (and "we" includes our federal government) do what's necessary to restore them to health.
