BPA Connects More Renewable Power

by Staff
BPA Journal, July 2011

BPA expects that more than 7,000 MW of wind generation could connect to its system as early as 2013.

Crews in Southeast Washington are building one of the largest substations in BPA's system to boost energy from new wind turbines so it can flow to consumers across the West.

BPA is building the Central Ferry Substation to feed electricity from Puget Sound Energy's new Lower Snake River Wind Project into the agency's transmission system. Energy from the wind turbines will enter the new substation at 230-kilovolts. BPA's equipment will step up the energy to 500-kilovolts and then loop it into nearby high-voltage transmission lines.

Phase one of the wind project should be complete by the end of this year and will add up to 343 megawatts of renewable wind energy to the more than 3,500 MW already connected to BPA's grid. The project could one day generate more than 1,250 megawatts.

BPA started the $100 million substation project in July 2010 and is on schedule to complete the project in November 2011.

BPA expects that more than 7,000 MW of wind generation could connect to its system as early as 2013. BPA's Wind Integration Team is working to adapt the power grid to this new variable, carbon-free energy source.
