Buoy 10 Challenge/Chinook Salmon Will Mesh
on Friday in Lower Columbia River

by Bill Monroe
The Oregonian, August 12, 2018

Buoy 10 Challenge includes prizes and prize money, a day's fishing and a barbecue for entrants, who can sign up for $110 per angler in teams of one to seven. Chinook salmon have finally begun entering the Columbia River between Astoria and Ilwaco, Wash., with a mix of upriver-bound and lower river fish reported Saturday in the Buoy 10 area.

Fish were caught from Hammond to the Megler side of the estuary near the bridge.

Just in time, too, since the ocean closes Sunday evening to salmon fishing between Cape Falcon near Manzanita and Leadbetter Point at the north end of Long Beach Peninsula.

It's also timely for the coming Friday's Buoy 10 Challenge, a fund-raising event for the Northwest Sportfishing Industry Association.

The association lobbies state and federal governments for sportfishing and conservation issues. It's currently involved with other groups in working for passage of expanded sea lion control in the Columbia River and its tributaries.

Prizes and prize money, a day's fishing and a barbecue are in store for entrants, who can sign up for $110 per angler in teams of one to seven.

Registration and information are available online, email at events@nsiafishing.org, by calling 503-631-8859.
