The South Korean cars normally are unloaded and staged at the Port of Tacoma. But an increase in Kia production temporarily finds the Port of Tacoma out of room to handle the upcoming delivery, said Greg Stubberfield, the Tacoma port manager in charge of handling the shipment of 3,924 vehicles.

Only rarely has Olympia processed the exporting of low volumes of used cars, including a destination in the Russian Far East. Those shipments were nearly 10 years ago.

The 660-foot ship Morning Meridian is expected to begin unloading 8 models of Kias about 8 a.m. Sunday in Olympia. About 100 longshore workers are expected to work most of the day driving the cars onto the port's cargo yard, said Kari Qvigstad, the Olympia port's marketing and business development director.

The cars may remain on Olympia's yard a couple of months before being sent to Tacoma for further processing on the way to dealerships, Qvigstad said. Kia models including the Rio, Sedona, Spectra, Optima, Amanti, Sportage, Rondo and Sorento are expected in the shipment.
