U.S. Seeks Firms for Rewind, Cavitation Repair
at 810-MW Lower Monumental Dam

by Staff
HydroWorld.com, April 24, 2014

Lower Monumental Dam in arid Southeastern Washington impounds a reservoir of 28.7 miles in length. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers seeks information on firms able to perform generator rewinds and turbine cavitation repairs at 810-MW Lower Monumental Dam on the Snake River in Washington. Responses are due May 2.

The Corps' Walla Walla District took bids in April to supply a scroll case personnel hoist system and headgate pit fall protection at Lower Monumental. It requested information in March on firms able to upgrade bridge crane VFD drive controls at the project.

The district now seeks information on firms able to rewind generators and repair turbine cavitation at Lower Monumental. Responses are to help the agency determine the type of solicitation to be issued.

The Corps said generator Unit 1 experienced a runner hub linkage failure, prompting the Corps to weld blocks to the hub to hold the blades in a fixed position. The proposed work would replace internal hub linkage components requiring disassembly of the main unit and turbine runner, with a provision to inspect and refurbish other turbine and generator components. Repairs would include cavitation repair to Unit 1 blades, hub and discharge ring as well as repair of cavitation damage to the Unit 2 runner. The contractor also would supply a new stator winding and stator core. The work is valued at $10 million to $25 million.

A sources sought notice may be obtained from the Federal Business Opportunities Internet site, www.fbo.gov, by entering Solicitation No. W912EF14RSS37 in the "Keyword/Solicitation #" box.

Responses are due May 2 by e-mail to the address below. For information, contact Phyllis Buerstatte, Contract Specialist, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Walla Walla District, CENWW-CT, 201 N.
