Columbia Falls Aluminum
Staying Open into October

by Associated Press
Great Falls Tribune, September 11, 2009

(Chris Peterson photo) The CFAC plant, shown here Monday, is expected to shut down entirely by February. A recent court ruling didn't help the company's finances by any means. COLUMBIA FALLS -- The Columbia Falls Aluminum Co. will keep the plant open at least another month, until the end of October.

The company had previously said the plant would shut down in September.

The company is in the middle of a long-term negotiation with Bonneville Power Administration for power. BPA officials told the aluminum company that it could get power from the open market on a temporary basis.

There have been shutdown announcements at the company since December, when it gave 200 workers 60-days notice of closure because of increased costs for raw products and decreased prices for aluminum. But the plant has remained open, although running on decreased capacity.
