Chinook Fishing will Continue on the Snake River by Staff Statesman Journal, June 18, 2007

ENTERPRISE - Because of a surplus of spring Chinook in the Upper Snake River, Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife biologists will extend the sport fishing season and increase bag limits until July 2.

Fishing originally had scheduled to close today between Dug Bar and Hells Canyon Dam.

Fishing will be open Fridays through Mondays until July 2 from the Dug Bar boat ramp upstream to the deadline below the dam.

The bag limit is two hatchery adipose fin-clipped spring Chinook, one of which can be an adult, or two jack salmon a day.

Gear is restricted to barbless hooks.

"Catchable fish are still in the river, and we are hopeful the longer season will provide more anglers with the thrill of landing these magnificent fish," said

Scott Patterson, the department's Northeast Region hatchery coordinator.

It is the fourth straight year that officials for Oregon and Idaho Fish and Wildlife have been allow for springer fishing because of surplus fish returning to the base of Hells Canyon Dam.
