F&G Announces 2014
Spring Chinook Rules

by Roger Phillips
Idaho Statesman, March 24, 2014

Seasons will begin on April 26 on the Clearwater, Lochsa, Lower Salmon, Little Salmon and Snake River in Hells Canyon from Dug Bar to Hells Canyon Dam. Closing dates will be determined and ordered by the Commission based on harvest quotas.

Limits will be four fish per day with a possession limit of 12 fish and a season limit of 20 fish. Only two of the daily limit of four fish may be adults on the Lower Salmon, Little Salmon, Snake River and South Fork Clearwater River. Only one chinook of the daily bag limit of four fish may be an adult on the Main stem Clearwater, North Fork Clearwater, Middle Fork Clearwater and the Lochsa River.

A special restriction will be placed on a short stretch of the Clearwater River known as Big Eddy. That stretch will be closed to watercraft. Anglers fishing from the bank will be allowed to fish that section. Boundaries will be clearly posted.

Details of the 2014 spring chinook salmon season will be posted on the Fish and Game website HERE. The printed brochure will be available at license vendors soon.

The run has just started with fish leaving the Pacific and entering the Columbia River. Only 37 fish by Monday have passed through Bonneville Dam near The Dalles, Oregon, which is the first of eight dams on the Columbia and Snake rivers. Salmon fishing typically starts getting good on the Clearwater in May, and on the Main Salmon and Little Salmon rivers in late May and early June.

This year's run is forecasted to be an improvement over the last couple years, but probably consistent with the 10-year average.
