Spring Chinook Bag Limits Trimmed by Staff Lewiston Tribune, May 14, 2009

Bag limits for adult spring chinook will be reduced on some Idaho rivers and the chinook season on the Snake River near Little Goose Dam in Washington will close early.

The daily bag limit for adult spring chinook will drop from two fish to one starting Monday on the Clearwater River and its tributaries and the Middle Fork of the Clearwater will close to salmon fishing.

Anglers on the Clearwater will be allowed to keep up to four jack chinook per day, provided they don't keep any adult salmon. If they harvest one adult chinook, anglers can keep three jacks per day. The bag limits for adult chinook on the Salmon and Little Salmon rivers will remain at two per day. But salmon managers will allow anglers to keep up to six jacks per day.

The chinook salmon season on the Snake River near Little Goose dam will close at sunset Sunday. The moves by both states were announced today and follow a reduced spring chinook run forecast released earlier this week. Salmon managers had expected about 130,000 spring chinook to return past lower Granite Dam on the Snake River this year. But the run started weeks late and never caught up. The new forecast calls for about 50,000 to 60,000 chinook to pass Lower Granite.
