Coho Salmon Fishing to Reopen on Part of
the Columbia River from Friday Through Oct. 31

by Bill Monroe
The Oregonian, October 16, 2019

Graphic: Returns of Adult salmon and Steelhead to Idaho as counted at the last dam they must cross on their upstream journey (1962-2018) Oregon and Washington will reopen coho salmon fishing Friday in the Columbia River, from Tongue Point upriver to The Dalles Dam, to last through the end of October.

Hatchery coho fishing will remain open below Bonneville Dam after Nov. 1.

In a telephone conference call Wednesday afternoon, the states also authorized an additional retention sturgeon fishery in the lower Columbia (Wauna to Bonneville Dam) on Saturday (Oct. 19) and next Thursday (Oct. 24).

Only coho salmon will be allowed in the salmon reopening. Anglers must release all other salmon and steelhead.

All coho below Bonneville Dam and between the dam and Hood River Bridge must be hatchery fish (with clipped adipose fins). Above the Hood River Bridge to The Dalles Dam, any coho may be kept within the two-fish daily limit.

Sturgeon anglers must adhere to previous rules: Keep only white sturgeon with fork-length of 44 to 50 inches; one per day and two per season. Those who’ve already kept two legal sturgeon cannot tag any additional fish.
