Containerized Future?

by Staff
Wheat Life, December 2008

Can you imagine a time when shipping containers bound for overseas markets are loaded by farmers in the field? Theodore Prince, the president of Consolidated Chassis Management can. He wrote that staging containers in the field eliminates the need for the farmer to maintain storage infrastructure and allows annual matching of storage requirements with expected crop yield. "Moreover, it is less expensive to truck a container to and from a distant farm site than it is to move bulk grain." Not to mention, the grain is handled less - just two times versus eight times for a bulk delivery. "Theoretically, the ease of shipping containers would enable farmers to contract directly with end users, thereby eliminating the need for middlemen and increasing the farmer's yield," he said in an article which appeared in World Grain.
