Craig Honored as 'Hydro Champion'

by Staff
Idaho Farm Bureau, March 2001

United States Senator Larry Craig was honored last month as a "Hydro Champion" by a broad coalition of public and private hydroelectric interests. Craig is the author and primary sponsor or S. 71, "The Hydroelectric Licensing Process Improvement Act of 2001" legislation which seeks to make sense out of the lengthy, costly and duplicated process of relicensing non-federal hydroelectric generating facilities throughout the country.

He received the award at the annual meeting of the Hydroelectric Licensing Reform Task Force, a group of 17 investor and publicly-owned hydropowr producers working toward enactment of meaningful, substantive hydroelectric licensing improvements.

Approximately 73 percent of the Northwest's hydroelectric generating capacity is currently, or will face, relicensing in the next 15 years, according to the National Hydropower Association (NHA)
