Report: The Dalles Lands Google Site by Staff Portland Business Journal, February 17, 2005

Internet search engine company Google Inc. is planning to move some of its technology infrastructure to The Dalles, bringing up to 100 new jobs to the Wasco County community, according to a report in The Dalles Chronicle Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) agreed to pay $1.87 million for 30 acres of industrial land within the Port of The Dalles' Chenoweth Creek Industrial Subdivision, the Chronicle reported.

Mountain View, Calif.-based Google could also purchase three other area sites.

Both parties have signed off on a sales agreement. But the Chronicle reported it's contingent on conditions in the agreement being met -- such as tax incentives and power supply.

U.S. Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., set up a conference call between Google execs and Bonneville Power Administration chief Stephen Wright, which Walden said greatly facilitated negotiations, the Chronicle reported.

Google representatives contacted by The Business Journal Thursday morning confirmed that the deal was in the works, but declined to provide more details about why The Dalles was chosen or what type of work would be done at the site.

The most-used site in the world for Web searches, Google conducts more than 200 million searches a day. The company had 2004 net income of $399.1 million.
