Corps Announces Extension of The Dalles Navigation Lock Closure by Five Days by Staff Columbia Basin Bulletin, January 7, 2011

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Portland District has alerted commercial and recreational mariners that it is extending the closure of The Dalles navigation lock to March 23.

The lock at Columbia River mile 192 closed Dec. 10 for the replacement of the downstream miter gate, and was originally scheduled to reopen March 18.

Challenges early in the fabrication of the new gate and a modification to add additional welding led to delays in the schedule. The Corps and its contractors have worked to accelerate the schedule and have gained back all but five days of the original 1-2 week delay.

"We understand and deeply regret the impact to our navigation stakeholders caused by this schedule change, but it is not possible to safely recover the remaining days," said The Dalles miter gate replacement project manager Pat Duyck. "The Corps and our contractors are working large crews around the clock in an effort to minimize the potential for additional delays."

Portland and Walla Walla districts are replacing the downstream navigation lock gates at The Dalles, John Day and Lower Monumental dams and conducting a variety of maintenance and repair work at other locks in the Columbia-Snake navigation system.
