Dams Stand in Way of Salmon

by Andrew Wulfers
The Oregonian, July 1, 2003

It's a very welcome surprise to see a Northwest politician (Sen. Mike Crapo, R-Idaho), finally make a stand in the name of salmon ("Fisheries officials defend salmon plan," June 25). Perhaps this provides a glimmer of hope in the otherwise irreversible fate of the last great fish.

Isn't it time that all of the elected officials stand up for what makes sense: the removal of the four dams on the lower Snake River and the rehabilitation of our Northwestern heritage?

It's good science, unlike that currently being touted by the Bonneville Power Administration's biologists and the National Marine Fisheries Service. They're trying to sell the idea that salmon are well on the road to recovery when in reality they teeter on the brink of extinction.

A healthy river with lots of fish means lots of jobs and a healthy economy. The time is now to reverse archaic ideas about the land that sustains us.
