Columbia, Snake Dam Plan Gains Support by Associated Press East Oregonian, November 1, 2007

The federal agency in charge of restoring salmon said Wednesday that the latest court-ordered plan for running hydroelectric dams in the Columbia and Snake River basins is not likely to jeopardize the survival of threatened and endangered salmon and steelhead.

The draft biological opinion from NOAA Fisheries looked at how the amount of water spilled over the dams and run through the turbines affects 13 species. The fish are struggling with overfishing, the impact of climate change on the oceans, and the loss of freshwater habitat to dams, logging, agriculture and development.

Once a final review is finished, it will go to U.S. District Judge James Redden in Portland, who tossed out the last plan for violating the Endangered Species Act and has warned he wants something that will help the fish thrive, not just survive.
