Conservationists in Deal
to Protect Salmon Habitat

by Associated Press
KIVI TV, April 28, 2009

SALMON, Idaho - Conservationists say they have reached a deal to protect 300 acres along a tributary of the Salmon River in central Idaho.

The Nature Conservancy announced the deal Tuesday for a conservation easement along Carmen Creek. The easement will protect a working ranch, wildlife habitat and stream habitat for Chinook salmon and steelhead trout.

The Nature Conservancy bought the easement from Tom McFarland, a third-generation rancher, with a mix of private and public grants. The easement will be transferred to the Lemhi Regional Land Trust.

The easement allows McFarland to continue to own and operate the property as a working ranch.
