Demand Dam Removal in Exchange

by Brent Bolton
The Oregonian, February 18, 2005

If President Bush can muster the votes in Congress to require the Bonneville Power Administration to charge market rates, perhaps our delegation should demand that the Snake and Columbia River dams be removed.

After all, we can get market-rate power anywhere. Free-flowing rivers and restored salmon runs, however, are priceless.

And, if the federal government begins to make huge profits selling energy from the dams, it will have a severe conflict of interest when it comes to mitigating the environmental effects of those dams.
