Development on West Hayden Island

by Walt LeDoux
The Oregonian, July 30, 2010

In spite of overwhelming objection from citizens and conservation groups, the Portland City Council voted July 29 to proceed with studies to annex West Hayden Island. For whom? One entity: the Port of Portland, an organization that can't make it without taxpayer help. Yes, we all pay property taxes to keep the Port afloat (pun intended). What a joke!

If the Port were a viable, self-sustaining business, I could appreciate its need/desire to expand. But it is not. It can't even fill the facilities it now has. The City Council shouldn't be catering to the Port by spending valuable resources in studying the prospect.
