Steelhead Report: Die Hards

by Eric Barker
Lewiston Tribune, December 6, 2010

Die hard steelhead anglers had a pretty good weekend of fishing, according to the catch rates calculated by the Idaho Department of Fish and Game.

The hottest fishing was found on the Snake River in Hells Canyon between the mouth of the Salmon River and Hells Canyon Dam. Anglers there averaged two hours of fishing per steelhead caught and three hours per steelhead kept. However, fisheries technicians only checked five anglers who collectively logged 48 hours of fishing to come up with those numbers.

Fishing was almost as good on the Snake River between Lewiston and the mouth of the Salmon River. There, 44 anglers fished a collective 409 hours and caught 115 fish for an average of four hours of fishing for every steelhead cuaght and 10 hours for every keeper.

Here is a list of hours per fish caught/hours per fish kept for other steelhead hot spots.

Clearwater River mouth to Orofino, 9/15.

Clearwater River upstream of Orofino, 8/-.

North Fork Clearwater, 6/12.

South Fork Clearwater, no steelhead caught.
