DOE gets its First Ever Deputy Assistant Secretary of Energy Efficiency by Staff Columbia Basin Energy Report, May 1, 2007

The Department of Energy announced today that David E. Rodgers will become the first Deputy Assistant Secretary for Energy Efficiency in the agency's history.

Steven G. Chalk will become the Deputy Assistant Secretary for Renewable Energy.

The appointments were announced by the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy.

Together, the new deputy assistant secretaries will oversee the technology development and deployme nt of DOE's applied R&D portfolio for clean, domestic, and affordable technologies. Both have extensive background in energy policy, technology, and DOE's commercialization efforts

Announcing the move, Assistant Secretary Alexander Karsner said "The escalating importance of the Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy to address critical national needs of energy security, environmental stewardship, and economic competitiveness demand us to evolve the way we manage and lead the portfolio for acceleration of market penetration of the technologies the taxpayer has invested in over the last quarter century.

"I'm especially pleased to elevate the importance of Energy Efficiency to the highest level of executive management in my front office to address the challenges including the Secretary's Energy Transformation Initiative, including efficiency in the Advanced Energy Initiative, and addressing our five-year schedule in the appliance standards program.

David Rodgers has played a critical role in each of these efforts, and will continue to ensure energy efficiency gets the highest level of management attention as we roll out several new programs for the built envir onment, such as Energy Smart Schools and Hospitals, expand the Industrial Technology Program to include high-tech industries, implement the President's Executive Order across the Federal government, and support the President's goals in modernizing and elevating CAFE standards.

"Steve Chalk's recent experience in managing the President's Hydrogen Fuel Initiative, of $1.2 billion over five years, and m ore recently the Solar America Initiative in our Solar Technology Program and in our Building Technologies Program makes him a proven leader in prudent management of taxpayer resources to catalyze industry, academia, and our National Laboratories, for maximum utilization of clean energy resources in a holistic way that begins with applied science R&D but also includes manufacturing, commercialization, and education."

The appointments were effective yesterday, April 30, 2007.
