Columbia River Dredging
Project Nears Completion

by Staff
Dredging News Online, May 20, 2010

Pamplin Media Group reports that whilst the project to dredge the Columbia River shipping channel from 40ft to 43ft isn't quite finished, hopes are high that it could help economic development along the channel.

Said the report: "Already in Longview, a grain terminal is set to be constructed because of the increased depth, which lets ships haul more load. Port of Longview spokeswoman Ashley Helenberg said when it opens in 2011 it should create 50 permanent jobs."

Over the winter, the Army Corps of Engineers blasted basalt rock near the downstream end of Sauvie Island and now has moved on to dredge consolidated rock that collected near the mouth of the Cowlitz River following the eruption of Mount S. Helens.

The long-awaited project was 20 years in the making.
