Dibblee Point Beach to Close for Dredge Work

by Staff
The Daily News, May 27, 2009

The popular Dibblee Point beach area will be closed two months starting June 2 so workers can mobilize equipment for the Columbia River channel-deepening project.

The Port of Portland dredge Oregon will work a three-mile stretch of river between Rainier and Longview starting June 8, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Support equipment will be set up at Dibblee Point starting June 2.

Dredge materials will be disposed of in the Dibblee Point area, according to the Corps.

Deepening the river three feet from its mouth to the Port of Portland, first proposed more than two decades ago, is nearing completion. It will allow large freighters to carry fully loads, and Port of Longview officials say the project is a key reason a developer plans to build a major grain terminal there.
