16-Million Salmon Eaten by Birds by Staff Wheat Life, May 2008

In 2007 the tilte "world's largest colony" again went to both cormorants and to terns nesting on East Sand Island near the mouth of the Columbia River. Together, nearly 50,000 birds ate as many as 16-million young salmon and steelhead that had survived the trek from natal streams and hatcheries in Idaho, Oregon and Washington, according to research led by Dan Roby of Oregon State University and consultant Ken Collis. Among those fish are 13 stocks listed under the Endangered Species Act.
