Fall Chinook Migration
Breaks Records

by Rich Landers
The Daily News, September 10, 2014

Tyler Barrong of Spokane lands a 34.25-inch fall Chinook while salmon fishing near the confluence of the Clearwater and Snake rivers on Sept. 16, 2014. (Shawn Barrong photo) Fall chinook are migrating in droves, with more than 180,354 chinook climbing the fish ladders at Bonneville Lock and Dam since Sunday.

Monday's return of 67,521 shattered the record for the largest, single-day return that was set last September at 63,870. On Tuesday, 45,809 chinook were counted.

The fish are among the 359,258 fall chinook seen so far at the Bonneville Dam. About 1.5 million adult chinook are predicted to return to the Columbia River Basin by the end of the year.

The returns are the result of an "all H" approach -- harvest, habitat, hydro and hatcheries -- by federal, tribal, state and nonprofit organizations in the region to improve conditions in the tributaries and main stem river.
