Fall Salmon Season Opens Today in Columbia River Basin by Bob Brown The Olympian, August 1, 2009

With today's opening of fall salmon fishing in the Columbia River Basin, anglers will be allowed to catch and keep up to six adult salmon per day, provided that at least four of them are hatchery-reared coho. No wild coho may be retained.

The six-fish limit will be in effect on the Cowlitz, Elochoman, Grays (including the West Fork), Kalama, Lewis (including the North Fork), Toutle (including the Green and North Fork) and Washougal rivers, plus the Klickitat River, which spills into the Columbia above Bonneville Dam.

Saltwater salmon fishing is excellent at Westport and Ilwaco, with many charters returning before noon with limits. Beginning today, Marine Area 8-1 (Deception Pass, Hope Island and Skagit Bay), Marine Area 8-2 ( Port Susan and Port Gardner), Commencement Bay and all ocean fisheries from Neah Bay south to Ilwaco will open to salmon fishing seven days per week.

The Columbia River's Buoy 10 recreational salmon and steelhead fishery opens today and runs through Aug. 31.
