Bonneville Power Administration Proposed
First Rate Increase in Six Years

WASHINGTON - The Bonneville Power Administration is planning to raise their rates in the upcoming months.

People throughout Tri-Cities area will most likely see an increase in their electric bills but not until October.

Representative from BPA report that they plan an approximate increase of about 9 point 4 percent which will effect all of their utility companies.

Representatives from Benton and Franklin PUD's and the City of Richland said it's still too earlier to say exactly how much individual customers will be effected.

This is the first increase from BPA in six years.

Among other reasons Bonneville Power Representatives said they need to raise the rates to keep up with ongoing safety regulations the are required to comply with. BPA representative Doug Johnson said, "We have an aging hydro system that needs to be maintained and if we can, improve its output."

Other costs that are blamed for the proposed increase include projects to protect the endangered salmon in the Columbia River.

The poor economy is also effecting the amount of power being bought and used.

This is just a preliminary plan and there will be public discussions before a final decision is made.
