First Two Sockeye Salmon
Arrive in Stanley Basin

by Associated Press
The Olympian, July 25, 2009

Idaho's Governor Cecil Andrus releases adult Sockeye into Redfish Lake, Idaho in 1994. This was the first such adult release and which was forced upon the federal government by the Shoshone-Bannock BOISE, Idaho – The first two sockeye salmon of the season have returned to central Idaho.

State biologists say the fish arrived Thursday, completing a 900-mile journey that started in the Pacific Ocean and required the passage of eight dams. The two fish are the first of hundreds that could return to the Sawtooth Valley to spawn over the next two months.

As of Thursday, federal fish counters reported that 1,157 Snake River sockeye, a species listed as endangered in 1991, had passed Lower Granite Dam near Lewiston.

Tests on these two fish indicate they emigrated from the Stanley area in 2007.
