Fishing Report, May 16

by Terry Otto
The Columbian, May 16, 2018

Steelhead make their final push to the headwaters of the Clearwater and Salmon rivers during spring, which concentrates them in the upper tributaries. Columbia River angling for summer steelhead and spring Chinook jacks is now open between Tongue Point and the I-5 Bridge.

Angling for shad will be open from Buoy 10 upstream to Bonneville Dam.

White sturgeon retention is open from Buoy 10 upstream to Wauna powerlines on Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays from May 14 through June 4.

White sturgeon retention is closed from Wauna powerlines upstream to McNary Dam but remains an option for catch and release fishing. Anglers are reminded that spawning sanctuaries are in effect.

The McNary Pool is open to the retention of legal white sturgeon through July 31.

Walleye angling is good in The Dalles Pool and excellent in the John Day Pool.
