Outdoors: Fishing Report

COLUMBIA FISHING REPORTS

Spring Chinook fishing in the Northwest is popular either from a boat or from the bank. Reports of sport angler checks from the past week and related information provided by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife.

Ocean: Last weekend, salmon anglers at Marine Area 1 (Ilwaco) averaged a fish per rod. The majority of the catch was coho.

Columbia River sturgeon: Closed for sturgeon retention downstream of The Dalles dam, except that retention of legal-sized sturgeon will be allowed June 20-21 between Bonneville and The Dalles dams. Catch-and-release fishing allowed.

Columbia River salmonids: Last week, 1,523 salmonid anglers (including 335 boats) had 208 adult and 13 jack spring chinook, 97 steelhead and 7 sockeye. 78 (37 percent) of the adult chinook were kept.

Columbia River shad: Below Bonneville Dam, 448 shad anglers (including 10 boats) with 1,807 shad kept and 28 released.

Columbia River pikeminnow: Last week at Cathlamet, 95 anglers turned in 444 pikeminnow. At Willow Grove, 37 anglers with 25 fish. At Rainier, 31 anglers with 270 fish. At Kalama, 33 anglers turned in 282 finny pikeminnow.

Cowlitz River: 72 bank anglers had 26 spring chinook adults, 5 jacks and 3 steelhead. 16 boat anglers had 10 adult chinook and 3 jacks. For current river flow information, call (888) 502-8690.

Kalama River: No report on steelhead angling success. Adult spring chinook return as of 6/15/14 is 438 adults including 27 wild origin and 90 Lewis stock. The hatchery escapement goal is about 400 adults.

Lewis River: No report on steelhead angling success. Adult spring chinook return as of 6/15/14 is 903 adults including 16 wild origin. The hatchery escapement goal is about 1,300 adults.
