Salmon, Steelhead and Shad

Cowlitz River -- 15 bank anglers at the barrier dam kept 3 adult spring Chinook and 3 summer run steelhead. 14 boat anglers sampled at the trout hatchery kept 12 summer run steelhead. Fishing for steelhead was also reported very good in the Castle Rock area.

During five days of operations at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator, last week Tacoma Power recovered:

328 spring Chinook salmon, 57 jacks, 72 mini-jacks, 730 summer steelhead.

During the past week Tacoma Power employees released:

282 spring Chinook adults and 49 jacks into the Cispus River near the mouth of Yellow Jacket Creek.

421 recycled summer steelhead at the Interstate-5 boat launch.

River flows at Mayfield Dam are approximately 2,750 cubic feet per second on Monday, July 27. Water visibility is 15 feet.

Kalama River -- 43 bank anglers kept 15 steelhead and 2 Chinook plus released 4 steelhead. 12 boat anglers kept 5 steelhead. Salmon are reported moving into the river.

East Fork Lewis River -- No effort.

Washougal River -- 3 bank anglers had no catch.

Drano Lake -- 6 bank anglers released 1 Chinook and 3 steelhead. 67 boat anglers kept 1 Chinook and 14 steelhead plus released 15 Chinook, 32 steelhead, and 3 sockeye. 27 boats were counted here last Saturday morning.

Lower Columbia mainstem below Bonneville Dam -- In general, summer Chinook catches dropped sharply while steelhead continue to climb, especially in the Vancouver and Longview (including mouth of Cowlitz) areas.

Last week we sampled 983 salmonid anglers (including 132 boats) with 19 adult and 3 jack summer Chinook, 264 steelhead, and 2 sockeye. All of the adult Chinook were kept. 150 (57%) of the steelhead and all of the sockeye were kept.

Bonneville Pool -- 8 boat anglers kept 1 sockeye. Light effort last Saturday morning. The Dalles Pool -- 3 bank anglers and 6 boat anglers had no catch. 7 boats observed off the mouth of the Deschutes last Saturday morning.
