Electric Flow Faces Barriers

by Associated Press
Capital Press, October 5, 2007

FORT COLLINS, Colo. - Western states need to tear down the barriers that limit their ability to share electricity if they hope to tap into renewable energy and other electric sources the region needs to grow, governors said Sept 27.

Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter said such projects as his state's plan to share transmission lines with Wyoming and New Mexico to export electricity to Arizona and California won't work unless states cooperate.

"We hope to partner with those other states, with their transmission authorities, to do the things necessary to map a regional grid," Ritter said.

Gov. Dave Freudenthal said Wyoming produces more electricity than it can use, but can't get it to markets that need it. He said a new federal regulation system is needed to force states to work together.
