Sea Lion Dies in 'Freak Accident' at Bonneville Dam by Staff KPTV, May 5, 2015

CASCADE LOCKS, OR - A Steller sea lion at the Bonneville Dam died after getting stuck between two traps.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife said the incident happened sometime Monday night.

According to biologists, they believe the sea lion got caught between two cage traps and then became entangled in the tethering cables holding the traps together. The sea lion tried to reach the water but couldn't break free from the cables.

According to a veterinarian, the sea lion drowned and a complete necropsy on the animal will be performed.

"This is a very unfortunate incident, no one would have predicted this could have happened," ODFW spokesmanRick Hargrave said. "Our focus now is to prevent this from happening again."

Two other sea lions died in the traps at Bonneville Dam last week.

ODFW said they have temporarily suspended trapping operations at Bonneville Dam. Cage trap doors will be closed and locked, and a temporary barricade will be installed between the two cage traps.
