GE to Build its Largest Battery
Storage System in California

by Chris Martin
Bloomberg Business, August 20, 2015

General Electric Co. agreed to build a 30-megawatt energy-storage system in Southern California, its biggest battery deal to date.

Coachella Energy Storage Partners will use the system to provide load balancing, frequency regulation and other services to local utility Imperial Irrigation District, Fairfield, Connecticut-based GE said in a statement Thursday.

This is GE's third deal this year for its lithium-ion storage system. It shows growing demand from utilities for the technology to complement wider use of renewable energy. Battery storage systems help grid operators manage fluctuations in voltage caused by sudden changes in demand and supplies from intermittent power sources like solar and wind.

GE expects to begin installing batteries, inverters, transformers and control systems at the site in the Imperial Valley, about 100 miles (160 kilometers) east of San Diego, in early 2016.
