GE-Hitachi Joint Venture
Awarded Nuclear Deal

Star-News, June 7, 2007

Global Nuclear Fuel, a Wilmington-based joint venture of General Electric Co., Hitachi Ltd. and Toshiba Corp., has been awarded a six-year, multimillion-dollar contract to supply fuel and other engineering services for Energy Northwest's Columbia Generating Station, a nuclear plant 10 miles north of Richland, Wash.

The company will provide fuel for three two-year cycles beginning in 2009. Terms of the agreement were not disclosed.

"It's a medium-sized order," said Andy White, chief executive of GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy, which has majority control of Global Nuclear Fuel, which is on the same Castle Hayne campus as GE-Hitachi.

Columbia Generating Station is licensed to run until 2023.

Energy Northwest intends to seek a license extension to operate through 2043. The plant supplies enough eletricity topower Seattle, according to GE-Hitachi.

The plant currently uses fuel from France-based Areva, said Brad Peck, spokesman for Energy Northwest.
