Oregon and Washington fisheries managers agreed Thursday to open three short commercial gill-net seasons for tribal fishermen, targeting what is projected to be the biggest run of Columbia River fall chinook since 1988. Tribal gill-net fishing will be allowed from 6 a.m. Aug. 28 to 6 p.m. Aug. 31; 6 a.m. Sept. 4 to 6 p.m. Sept. 7; and 6 a.m. Sept. 11 to 6 p.m. Sept. 14. Tribal members are allowed to sell chinook, coho, steelhead, walleye and shad. The bistate Columbia River Compact also agreed to allow tribes to sell fish caught from scaffolds to the public after 6 a.m. Monday, until further notice. State biologists expect 659,800 fall chinook to enter the Columbia River this year. Of those, 501,600 are expected to pass Bonneville Dam, where they become available to tribal fishermen. Fish will be sold to the public at various sites along the Columbia River east of Bonneville Dam. For specific locations, call 800-487-3474.
