Tribes' Gill-net Time Extended by Staff The Oregonian, July 19, 2003

Fishery managers agreed Friday to extend an unusual tribal gill-net season for summer chinook salmon in the Columbia River.

Fishing will resume from 6 a.m. Monday to 6 p.m. Wednesday. Above-average returns of summer chinook made commercial gill-netting permissible for the first time in 38 years. To date, anglers from four tribes with treaty rights to Columbia Basin salmon have caught about 3,000 summer chinook, which is half of the 5 percent share of the expected run of 120,000 fish.

Tribal members sell their catch at the Marine Park at Cascade Locks, Lone Pine at The Dalles, the boat launch near Roosevelt, Wash., and other locations between Bonneville Dam and McNary Dam.
