Grays Harbor PUD Considers Joining Nuclear Effort by Staff The Olympian, August 20, 2009

The Grays Harbor Public Utility District is considering pitching in $25,000 to get in on the ground floor of a new statewide effort to build five to eight small-scale nuclear power plants, according to The Daily World of Aberdeen.

The push is being spearheaded by Energy Northwest, a collection of 22 public utility districts and five municipalities.

The group once was known as the Washington Public Power Supply System, its acronym pronounced as "whoops" after it defaulted on $2.25 billion worth of municipal bonds it had sold to help pay for nuclear power plants, including two at Satsop, that were mothballed before completion. Customers still are paying for the default.

Officials from Richland-based Energy Northwest will join the PUD commissioners for a workshop to discuss the endeavor at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the PUD's commission chambers in the Nichols Building at 220 Myrtle St. in Hoquiam. It is open to the public.
